The Vaccines for Children program is a federally funded program which provides vaccinations to children unable to receive them for financial reasons. Providers belonging to the program are required to monitor the storage temperatures of the vaccines to ensure potency and efficacy when administered. Thermometers are required to be calibrated against a standard traceable to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology).
During a recent study of VFC providers, 76% of vaccines stored were found to be exposed to inappropriate temperatures for 5 hours or greater, increasing the risk that children were not provided with maximum protection against the diseases.
